Top 5 Takeaways from the Hulu Upfront

A couple weeks ago, we had the pleasure of being at the Hulu 19 Upfront in Madison Square Garden. Between the celebrity appearances discussing their new upcoming shows, Hulu’s Chief Data Officer, Jaya Jolhatkar, running though how many hours people binge, or their CEO, Randy Freer, revealing the streamer has hit 28 million total US subscribers, there was plenty to scribble down and more importantly, look forward to!

Below you will find a summary of our biggest takeaways from the day:

  • Hulu is going to begin offering new ad experiences that are non-intrusive. This means advertisers will have the ability to target “binge” viewers with new ad formats. Our favorite was the Pause Ad, bringing up an ad immediately once a user pauses their show.

  • Hulu is going all-in on star power. This includes new shows from Mindy Kaling, George Clooney, Kyle Chandler, Reese Witherspoon, Kate McKinnon, Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman, and the list continues on.

  • Piggybacking off the above bullet - Hulu is introducing Hulu Kitchen, with content 100% dedicated to food. Bringing this to life are David Chang and Chrissy Teigen. They have inked a multi-year deal with Vox Media Studios, MajorDomo Media and Suit & Thai Productions.

  • Hulu and Marvel plan to expand their partnership with two new live-action series, Marvel’s Ghost Rider and Marvel’s Helstrom.

  • Hulu’s subscriber base is getting younger and younger. Their current median age is 31 and 1/3 of their subscribers are cord cutters/nevers.
